First Massachusetts Arborists Association Arbor Day of Service Announces Donation of $325,000 in Tree Care to 40 Commonwealth Towns

South Natick, Mass.— On Arbor Day, April 30, 2010, two hundred Massachusetts Arborists Association (MAA) member volunteers took part in a brand new state-wide event called Arbor Day of Service. Building on the association’s traditional celebration over the past 30 years, the service day allowed tree care professionals to give back to their local communities and to draw attention to the importance of proper tree care and tree planting.

"In difficult economic times like these tree care may be considered a luxury, but healthy trees are vital to our environment," said Mike Lueder, MAA president and owner of Lueders Tree & Landscape in Medfield, MA. "We are delighted so many MAA members stepped forward and made a real difference in their own communities."

On April 30, 40 Massachusetts communities received an estimated $325,000 in professional arboriculture services from 52 MAA member firms. The MAA partnered with the Massachusetts Tree Wardens and Foresters Association (MTWFA), and other local community leaders, to identify projects that could benefit from professional tree care. These projects included tree planting, ornamental pruning and hazard tree removal at 40 sites including town parks, elementary schools, community libraries, and playgrounds. More than 2,200 volunteer hours were recorded that day.

The Massachusetts Arborists Association recognizes the importance of trees and proper tree care with its annual Arbor Day celebration. Since 1979, MAA members have come together, annually, to provide much needed tree care at non-profit sites throughout the Commonwealth. Many historically significant sites have benefited from 30 years of MAA volunteerism including The Boston Common, Pilgrim Memorial Park in Plymouth, MA, Castle Hill in Essex, MA and most recently Minuteman National Park in Concord, MA.
