A day of camaraderie and giving back. A job well done. Grateful hosts.

On Friday, April 25, 2008 the Massachusetts Arborists Association (MAA) celebrated Arbor Day with its 29th annual volunteer project. This year’s host site was the Codman Estate in Lincoln, MA. About 200 MAA members pruned, planted, and fertilized an array of mature shade trees throughout the property. Hazardous trees were removed and healthy trees were transplanted as long lost vistas were cleared. Seasoned tree care professionals worked side-by-side with arboriculture students, and everyone pitched in to help bring the Codman Estate back to its glory days. It was a day filled with the spirit of service and professional pride.

This is the first year that the MAA has partnered with Historic New England for their annual Arbor Day Celebration. Chris McGinty, MCA of Framingham Parks & Recreation served as chairman of the MAA’s 2008 Arbor Day committee. He was assisted by committee co-chair Mike Lueders, MCA, MCLP of Lueders Tree & Landscape Co, Inc. and other MAA volunteer leaders.

“We can’t thank the MAA volunteers enough for their generous contribution of time and expertise,” said Ben Haavick, Team Leader of Property Care for Historic New England. “The arborists’ effort at Codman brings much needed awareness to the importance of professional tree care. In one day, they accomplished what it would have taken us more than a decade to complete. They clearly demonstrated the organization’s commitment to environmental stewardship,” he concluded.

As a gesture of thanks, every MAA member volunteer at Arbor Day received a complimentary Historic New England Garden & Landscape membership.

In a pre-lunch presentation, MAA president Jim Abusamra, MCA recounted the MAA’s long and successful history of celebrating Arbor Day by giving back to the local community. Chris McGinty, MCA, Arbor Day chairman, thanked the professional arborists who came from near and far to volunteer their time at this important event. He particularly recognized his fellow committee members, the team from Historic New England, and the sponsors for helping to make Arbor Day 2008 a successful and meaningful experience.
