Massachusetts Arborists Association Members Contribute $250,000 in Tree Care to Local Cities & Towns

South Natick, Mass.— On Arbor Day, April 26, 2013, nearly five hundred Massachusetts Arborists Association (MAA) members took part in a statewide volunteer effort called Arbor Day of Service. Building on the association's tradition of giving back, the annual service day allows tree care professionals to have a direct impact in their local communities and draws attention to the importance of proper tree care and tree planting.

More than forty Massachusetts communities received an estimated $250,000 in professional arboriculture services. The MAA partnered with local tree wardens, community leaders, and civic organizations to identify worthy projects in need of professional tree care. Professional arborists contributed their services at project sites on the Boston Public Garden, at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, Walden Pond State Reservation, Lynch Park in Beverly, South Common in Amherst, Cunningham Park in Milton and downtown areas of Hingham, Medford, Orleans, Wellesley, Wayland, Sudbury, Lexington, Fall River and North Attleboro. Several professional arborists participated in tree plantings and educational talks with elementary and middle school students. More than 3,000 volunteer hours were recorded that day.

"Everyone gave 100% today," said MAA president John Terault, MCA, of Asplundh Tree Expert Company in Shutesbury, Mass. "MAA volunteers pruned, planted, and removed hazardous trees across the Commonwealth. In these challenging economic times, hundreds of our members have stepped forward and donated their time, skills and energy to make a real difference to the health of trees, the safety of citizens and the beauty of these spaces."

The Massachusetts Arborists Association recognizes the importance of trees and proper tree care with its annual Arbor Day celebration. Since 1979, MAA members have come together every year to provide much needed tree care at non-profit sites throughout the Commonwealth.
