City of Lowell Tree Ordinance Management Program
The City of Lowell, Division of Planning and development is seeking proposals from firms, or individuals who are Massachusetts Certified Arborists, to assist the City implement the Lowell Tree Ordinance. The individual or firm chosen must have experience working with municipalities and tree wardens, as well as experience in successful tree care training programs. The consultant must also have experience with the USDA Forest Mobile Community Tree Inventory (MCTI). The scope of services will include all aspects of managing the City of Lowell Tree Ordinance. This project is partially funded through a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, Targeted Urban Forest Planning and Education Grant Program. The project completion date is June 15 2007.

Arnold Arboretum Arborist Apprentice
The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University is seeking applications from recent graduates of arboriculture programs for a single, paid, yearlong apprenticeship at its 265-acre site located in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston, Massachusetts. This training is intended for individuals pursuing a career in arboriculture at an arboretum or botanical garden, and will provide hands-on experience, working with our arborists in all aspects of the maintenance of a scientific collection of woody plants. Duties may include, but are not limited to: pruning, planting and transplanting trees and shrubs, climbing, fertilizing, irrigating, weeding, and controlling pests and diseases. The position will begin no sooner then September 1, 2006 and will end August 31, 2007. This is a benefits eligible position with an hourly rate of $14.25.

The Boston Parks and Recreation Department, acting through its Commissioner, is requesting qualifications for an Assistant Project Manager for its Urban Forestry Program. Entry-level, one-year, full-time contract position.
Salary $35,000 to $45,000 per year without benefits, commensurate with training and experience. The Position is full time from June 13, 2005 through June 12, 2006.
Job Description: The Assistant will be responsible for the administration and quality control of multiple street-tree planting contracts. The Assistant will review streetscape and other construction projects and provide recommendations to mitigate any impacts to public shade trees. The Assistant will be responsible for program development such as grant writing and community forestry programs including Arbour Day, Tree City USA, Keep it Clean/Green, the Boston Urban Stewards Program, and the Community Forest Partnership. The Assistant is also expected to perform any miscellaneous work that may be necessary to carry out the Urban Forestry Program.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in urban forestry or arboriculture, environmental science/ecology or a closely related field and three or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of urban forest management practices as needed to preserve the City's trees
- Excellent communication and public relations skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft programs
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with contractors' work practices
- Certified Arborist (state or ISA)
- Ability to read and interpret landscape plans, GIS maps, etc. as needed to assist developers and to manage urban forestry projects and programs
- Ability to identify problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions

Tree Climber, an SMEO/Laborer Position
The City of Marlborough , Department of Public Works is seeking to fill a vacancy for the position of Tree Climber (an SMEO/Laborer position). This vacancy is in the Forestry Group of the Forestry, Parks, and Cemetery Division.
Responsibilities for Tree Climber: Performs skilled and semi-skilled manual labor in connection with the general care of trees where climbing is required; performs a variety of manual tasks incidental to the trimming, pruning, planting, transplanting, seeding, spraying and removal of trees within the City. Uses a variety of tools necessary to perform tree care and maintenance. Must operate trucks with related capacity of more than three tons and up through nine tons, large tractors and equipment such as leaf loaders, bucket trucks, crane trucks, roadside cutters and large mowing systems. Also performs all labor duties as necessary. Requires considerable knowledge of tree climbing, trimming, treatment and removal methods; ability in the use and care of ropes, knots, climber hooks, riggings and tools commonly used in tree climbing and felling operations. A minimum of three (3) years experience in this area is required.
In addition to the above, the candidate must also have the following responsibilities:
Responsibilities for Laborer (3502A): Performs a variety of unskilled labor duties of which the following are typical examples: digging holes, trenches, and other excavations; shoveling materials and leveling areas; will be required to work on water and irrigation lines; loading and unloading supplies; moving furniture; cleaning litter and debris from cemeteries and parks; assisting in placing and holding heavy items in place; mowing grass using hand or small powered equipment; trimming shrubs and lower part of trees along sidewalks and highways; removing snow and ice using manual or small powered equipment; spreading sand on icy areas; performing laboring duties for skilled craftsman but not as a Helper or Apprentice nor for the purpose of learning the trade. Uses standard hand tools, i.e. shovels, picks, axes, saws, heavy wrenches and small power tools. This position is responsible for the care and upkeep of trees and other landscaped areas.
Responsibilities of Special Motor Equipment Operator (5703C): Operates any piece of motor driven equipment including trucks with a rated capacity of over nine (9) tons, tractors, semi-trailers, truck-trailer combinations, and special equipment such as roadside cutters, small and large mowers, brush cutters, road rollers, tractors, backhoes, front end loaders, rotary snow plows, mobile highway graders, mobile bituminous spreaders, and tar distributors. Operation of equipment in this class usually requires a Class B license from the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Positions in this class also operate hoisting equipment where a special license from the Mass Dept. of Public Safety is required. Greases, oils, cleans and performs other minor preventative maintenance on equipment including some servicing on the job for certain special equipment. May occasionally operate motor equipment of lower level of difficulty.
